Quality Family Health Institute’s Roberto Carballoso says the program serves the needs of students seeking post-secondary vocational training who have not yet earned a high school diploma.

According to Campus Director Roberto Carballoso, Quality Family Health Institute (QFHI) launched Career Online High School (COHS) to help students obtain the educational foundation they need to pursue post-secondary vocational training. “The majority of the students who come to QFHI do not have a high school diploma,” Carballoso said. “And they’re going to need one not only as they seek to enroll in our college-level courses, but as they strive to improve their chances in life overall.”

Carballoso said COHS was the best fit for the demographic his school serves. According to Carballoso, many students also come to QFHI with a language barrier, which prompted the school to initiate an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. “We are offering programs that really target the specific needs of the communities we serve. First we address the language barrier, then the lack of a high school diploma, and finally we are able to offer post-secondary career training in high-growth employment fields,” he said.

COHS is part of Smart Horizons Career Online Education (SHCOE), the world’s first private, SACS accredited, online school district. COHS was launched in 2012 by SHCOE partner ed2go, a division of Cengage Learning and the nation’s largest provider of turnkey online training, in order to offer a career-based education to the millions of adults without high school diplomas. COHS students earn both a high school diploma and credentialed career certificate.

“The fact that COHS is accredited made it very attractive for us,” Carballoso said. “There are online high schools out there that are not accredited, offering diplomas that colleges will not accept. With COHS, we’re offering students the opportunity to earn a respected diploma that they can actually use.”

QFHI is a private vocational school providing training for home health aides, certified nursing assistants, and phlebotomy and EKG technicians. COHS is offered on QFHI’s Greenacres, Florida campus, where the program is available to students in a supervised learning lab. “Since it’s an online program, it’s great for students to have a real person to help them navigate the program and provide a bit of motivation,” Carballoso said.

Carballoso also said that COHS students would have the option of enrolling in post-secondary level classes offered by QFHI as they progress through their high school coursework.

“This is a great stepping stone for these students as they get the education they need to better their lives,” Carballoso said. “COHS is a good fit for our community.”
