First Brown Mackie Students Earn Career Online High School Diplomas as Part of Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action Scholarship Program

The Brown Mackie College system of schools recently joined Smart Horizons Career Online Education (SHCOE) and Cengage Learning’s ed2go at the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America meeting, a program of the Clinton Global Initiative that addresses economic recovery in the United States. Earlier this year the Brown Mackie College system of schools launched Career Online High School (COHS) on several of its campuses as the first postsecondary partner in SHCOE and ed2go’s CGI Commitment to Action and the program is beginning to recognize its first graduates. SHCOE/ed2go’s Commitment to Action aims to re-engage youth and young adults in education and support employers in providing workforce training as part of CGI’s Education & Workforce Development track.

“The CGI America 2014 meeting provided an opportunity to interact with educators from around the world who share Brown Mackie College’s community engagement agenda of empowering youth and reconnecting them to the educational system,” said Michelle Toney, vice president of academic and student affairs at Brown Mackie College, who attended CGI America on behalf of the College. “The meeting provided an opportunity for us to share innovative ideas to address the challenges facing our workforce and will influence our commitment and efforts in making a continued positive impact in reconnecting American youth to education.”

The online high school program is offered in computer labs on six Brown Mackie College campuses and allows students to earn a career-based online high school diploma plus a general career preparation certificate. Brown Mackie College donates both the classroom space for the program and an instructor who serves as a facilitator to lead students through the program.

“The COHS program offers extensive support to students in completing their high school education—many who have been unsuccessful in previous academic settings,” said Toney. “From COHS’ principal to the academic coaches and the administrators, the level of commitment and responsiveness students receive from COHS is outstanding.”

Brown Mackie College also announced that it recently celebrated its first graduates of the program.

“We’re gratified to see our first enrolled students in the program approach graduation and move forward to a brighter future,” said Toney. “We are proud to be a partner in making an impact in these students’ lives.”
