Smart Horizons Career Online Education (SHCOE), an AdvancED/SACS accredited online school district based in Pensacola, FL, has announced a strategic partnership with Project Literary, Inc. of Pueblo, CO, to launch E-cademy Career High School (ECHS). This innovative 18-credit career online high school will provide adults of underserved communities in Colorado an opportunity to both complete their high school education and receive a career certificate.

SHCOE is an online high school district that gives students returning to the education process an opportunity to earn an 18-credit high school diploma as well as complete course work for a career certificate in Childcare, Health Care (Home Health Aide), Transportation Services, Office Management, Protection Services, and Homeland Security.

SHCOE has been granted District Accreditation from the AdvancED/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Accreditation Commission as the world’s first online school District. AdvancED/SACS District accreditation signifies that SHCOE and all of its schools are fully accredited and that SHCOE is recognized across the nation as a quality school system.

“As an educational organization, our entire academic and operations team is excited about the implementation and launch of a cutting-edge career online high school for adults in Colorado,” said Wendy Kauffman, Chief Operating Officer for SHCOE. “Our collaboration with Project Literacy is a melding of visions that stands at the heart of SHCOE’s mission, which is to provide career training opportunities for adults. This is a perfect fit that has significant expansive opportunities throughout Colorado.”

Project Literacy, Inc. provides on-site, as well as online services for adults seeking to improve reading, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension. In addition to this specific area of assistance, Project Literacy offers career development classes ranging from basic computer training to customer service, management skills, and even specific industry classes.

“Project Literacy is excited to join forces with SHCOE to offer this unique opportunity to reach adults within communities that need it the most,” said Joy Morales Cress, President of Project Literarcy, Inc. “There has been a lot of research lately regarding literacy rates, graduation rates, and budget constraints all over the U.S.

Cress also noted that, “with all this information at our fingertips, E-cademy Career High School has the opportunity to address some of the gaps that need to be filled, especially adults in minority communities. The 20 to 60 year old adult population needs more options to complete high school, beyond the traditional GED route. This is perfect because they can graduate with both a high school diploma and academic coursework needed to earn a career certificate.”

“The partnership with Project Literacy serves as a prototype, as we continue to establish online adult high schools managed and supported by SHCOE throughout the country,” said Kauffman. “This is a great first step.”
